AdBlue 101: The Essentials
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut elit tellus, luctus nec ullamcorper mattis, pulvinar dapibus leo.
What Is It?
AdBlue is a colorless, non-toxic, odorless, and non-flammable liquid that’s used to reduce nitrogen oxide (Nox) emissions from diesel engines. It’s also know as Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) or AUS 32.
What Is It Used For?
AdBlue is used in vehicles with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology to help them comply with emission standards.
What Is It Made Of?
AdBlue is a Diesel Exhaust Fluid(DEF) made of 32.5% Urea and 67.5% deionized water. Urea is a synthetic product that contains ammonia
Why and When Should You Use It?
AdBlue is an essential solution for reducing harmful nitrogen oxide emissions, which helps protect the environment and ensures vehicles comply with strict emission standards like Euro 6. It plays a crucial role in improving the performance and health of diesel vehicles. Most new diesel cars registered after late 2015 are equipped with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology and require AdBlue, while some older diesel cars without SCR systems do not need it. Additionally, all commercial diesel vehicles weighing over 7.5 tons rely on AdBlue to meet emission regulations and operate efficiently.
What Are the Benefits of It?
- Fuel efficiency
- Emissions reduction
- Compliance with emission standards
- Engine longevity
How Does It Affect Fuel Consumption?
There is no evidence that AdBlue negatively affects fuel consumption. It focuses on reducing exhaust emissions, so it doesn’t mix with diesel at all. Some vehicles fuel consumption does benefit from using it (because it optimizes combustion).
How to Refill It?
In general, it is advised to check AdBlue tank level every time you fill up with diesel. If the tank is low, refill it in order to ensure that your engine is running cleanly and efficiently.
How to Store It?
AdBlue should be stored in a clean, sealed container, out of direct sunlight, and at a temperature between 0°C and 30°C to maintain its quality and effectiveness.
Temperature: AdBlue freezes at -11°C, so it must be stored above this temperature. If it freezes, it can still be used after thawing without losing its effectiveness.
Sunlight: Exposure to direct sunlight can reduce the urea potency of AdBlue, so it should always be kept away from sunlight.
Contamination: To avoid contamination, store AdBlue in a clean, sealed container and never use non-dedicated equipment like old diesel or oil containers. AdBlue must not be mixed with other fuels.
Storage Time: When stored properly, AdBlue can last up to a year, with a maximum shelf life of about 1.5 years.
Is It Dangerous?
Be aware that although AdBlue is non-toxic, it is corrosive and can cause irritation to the skin, eyes and lungs. Wear gloves and wash your hands and arms after filling. If AdBlue comes into contact with the vehicle’s paintwork, rinse the area with water.
